Overview

Maalifushi by COMO is a new island resort from COMO Hotels and Resorts. Located in the sparkling turquoise waters of the Maldives’ southerly Thaa Atoll, Maalifushi features a mix of 65 land and over-water suites and villas. Maalifushi offers guests three dining options: ‘Madi’ restaurant serves all-day international, Maldivian and healthful COMO Shambhala Cuisine, while ‘Thila’ pool and lounge bar specialises in salads, pizzas and wood-baked seafood. There is also ‘Tai’, a Japanese-inspired restaurant for sashimi and sushi.
A COMO Shambhala Retreat provides holistic wellness and Asian-inspired therapies including signature massages, facials and reflexology. Eight treatment rooms, some of them double, are set over-water with views across the Indian Ocean.
Maalifushi is the perfect combination with Cocoa Island, COMO’s original property in the Maldives, providing the opportunity to island-hop between the two resorts.

WINE & DINE

In Villa Dining at Maalifushi by COMO includes salads, pastas and refreshing juices and lassis, and is available from 7am until 11pm daily
COMO Shambhala Cuisine is a unique nutritional concept that incorporates organic ingredients rich in living enzymes, vitamins and sea minerals while still delivering on flavour.
Food is raw, steamed or grilled for maximum health benefits. Chefs also make ample use of the tandoor, a type of Indian oven that allows for the fat-free cooking of meats and fish whilst introducing a wonderful charcoal flavour.
COMO Shambhala Cuisine is served at Madi. It is also available via room service and private dining.
Tai, or red snapper, which is a celebratory fish in Japanese culture, aims to be among the finest Japanese restaurants in the Maldives, while showcasing fresh seafood from local waters.
At our dedicated sushi and cocktail bars, Tai’s chefs entertain guests with their culinary skills, focusing on sustainably caught seafood from the Indian Ocean.
Thila is named after rock formations in the Maldives that are covered with abundant marine life. As a place to congregate, it inspires our informal Maldives restaurant and pool bar where guests can come to chill out.
Food at Thila is easygoing and family-friendly, with salads, freshly cooked seafood, pizzas and Turkish ‘pide’.
Laid-back music, pool tables and an open-air pool bar with ocean views make Thila the relaxed and vibrant heart of island life on Maalifushi.
‘Madi’ (meaning Manta Ray in the local Dhivehi language) takes its inspiration from the region’s fresh, tropical produce and abundant seafood.
Menus are light and flavourful, with a range of local, Mediterranean & simple classic dishes served all day, from breakfast to late evening.
Madi also holds themed nights each week, including a Tradition Maldivian Bodu Beru night, seafood bounty local seafood barbeque and a ´Thali´ evening focusing on south Indian specialties.
Madi, will open in the evening to offer themed nights on Monday (Maldivian Boduberu dance and drums), Wednesday (Indian Thali), and Friday (seafood barbeque under the stars with live entertainment). Madi will continue to serve breakfasts daily.

WHY WE UNIQUE

Facilities and Activities

At our overwater COMO Shambhala Retreat at Maalifushi, those seeking a spa holiday in the Maldives will discover signature COMO Shambhala treatments, emotionally rebalancing holistic techniques and facials for restorative skincare.
Although the Maldives are rated amongst the top ten diving destinations in the world, many experienced divers would put them in the top five. The sheer abundance of marine life and the clear visibility make this one of the greatest underwater regions on the planet, with Thaa Atoll’s particular status in the dive world assured by seasonal sightings of hammerheads and Manta Rays. All of this is within easy reach of Maalifushi.
During the dry season (January to April), currents tend to be strong with excellent visibility (25m to 40m).
Rainy season (May to December) brings rain and tropical storms, but some very good dives for Manta Rays. Visibility is reduced due to plankton in the water; however, this is also what most marine creatures feed upon.
Diving regulations in the Maldives are extremely stringent, with the maximum depth for diving being 30 metres and the maximum bottom time being 45 minutes.
All levels of competence can be catered for with ease, including absolute beginners seeking their first PADI certification.
As part of the general preservation and protection measures here, divers visiting the Maldives are encouraged to observe, respect and enjoy the pristine natural beauty of the marine environment, whilst leaving the reef as healthy as they found it.
Sea Plane Transfers FAQ
The Maldives are rapidly becoming popular among surfers (see http://www.tropicsurf.net/index.php?page=como-maldives), with some great long curving atoll reef waves. Farms break is 25 minutes away on guided boat trip with Tropic surf. The waves here are medium-sized while more challenging barrels are also available within reach of the resort. Best of all, crowds are non-existent.
Maalifushi by COMO and Tropicsurf announce 2014 surf programme
Maalifushi has launched a new surf programme working with ´luxury surf pioneers´ Tropicsurf to offer easy access to some of the most sought-after breaks. These Indian Ocean spots are among the surfing community’s best-kept secrets, and COMO guests have almost exclusive access to them.
The resort has a resident Tropicsurf guide who will work with guests of all abilities — from lagoon training, where fundamental skills such as balance are taught, through to expert instruction when tackling some of the toughest breaks in the Maldives. As part of the surf programme, equipment can be hired and boat transfers to the best spots can be arranged — including to the famous ‘Farms’ break on the resort’s southwest side.
Our week-long ‘Learn to Surf’ package, perfect for those looking to experience surfing for the first time, is priced from $6,170 per person. The ‘Surf Pro’ package, which also lasts a week and is aimed at more experienced surfers, starts at $7,390. Both packages include half-board accommodation.
Sea Plane Transfers FAQ
The Maldives in general, and Maalifushi in particular, offer very good water-based activities from diving to surfing. The waters surrounding the islands are clear, calm and exceptionally beautiful. The white sand and shallow lagoons mean sunshine reflects off the seabed, creating pools that are a warm, brilliant turquoise. This is also why the Maldives are appealing to families, with children able to snorkel safely, while for divers, there are numerous chronicled dive sites, as well as large tracts of unexplored channels and reefs which makes the atoll popular with liveaboard dive boats — which aside from Maalifushi, is currently the only other way to access this region in comfort. There are also some very good surf breaks in around Thaa Atoll.
Sailing
The Maldives’ calm, shallow waters provide the perfect place to learn sailing while the open water can offer challenges for the more experienced.
The dry season sees light to moderate winds from the northeast. The wet season sees moderate southwesterly winds. There is very rarely over 25 knots of wind, making the Maldives a year-round sailing destination with the seas at their calmest during the high season (roughly November to April).
At Maalifushi, catamaran sailing is available. Charges apply for lessons or for when you wish to be accompanied by a captain, or for guided snorkeling expeditions on a catamaran.
Snorkelling
For those who don’t dive, there is no need to miss out on the spectacular marine life of the Maldives. With just a mask and flippers, there is plenty to see around each resort and in the lagoon, with Maalifushi’s undisturbed waters making for some excellent opportunities. Children also much enjoy snorkelling, with complimentary gear provided to guests of Maalifushi.
Snorkellers, who can enjoy a scheduled complimentary snorkel trip with Maalifushi’s trained staff, will see an abundance of marine life such as Moray Eels, Trumpet Fish, Needle Fish, Soldier Fish, Lion Fish, Grouper, Snapper, Cod, Anthias, Cardinal Fish, Bluefin Jack, Sweetlips, Emperors, Butterfly Fish, Banner Fish, Angel Fish, Amemone Fish, Parrot Fish, Powder Blue Surgeon Fish, Convict Surgeonfish, Unicorn Fish and Puffer Fish. Occasionally Fusiliers are spotted here, as well as Trigger Fish, octopus and turtle.
For those who wish to explore further, Maalifushi can arrange guided aqua-safaris with the resort’s resident marine biologist.
With private guided sessions, those looking for meditation in the Maldives can learn the healing powers of this traditional practice. Maalifushi by COMO also offers tutelage in the deep yoga breathing technique known as pranayama
Maldives yoga is a way of life in Maalifushi by COMO, with complimentary yoga classes six days a week in our Yoga Studio or Yoga Pavilion.
Private tuition with our full-time yoga instructor is also available for focused sessions, both for beginners who want to discover the benefits of this ancient tradition and for those looking to improve their practice.
Meditation/Pranayama
Our resort gym is fully equipped with the latest cardio and strength training equipment as well as a variety of free weights. This 24 hour space is open to all guests.
